Add the stress of medical school to the mix and you can make a difficult situation nearly impossible. I certainly think so. I met the love of my life while in high school. I went to college in Connecticut and he in North Carolina. As if it were not enough that we spent all of college apart, we remained hundreds of miles away from one another while pursuing our graduate degrees. The amount of time we had to chat everyday dwindled as my workload surmounted. I found it increasingly difficult to devote m y attention to much outside of school. Clearly, I was not alone. Fortunately for me, our story ended happily.

One third to one half of patients will fail to follow a physician’s treatment recommendations. Labeling such patients “noncompliant” implicitly supports an attitude of paternalism, in which the physician knows best see: Patients filter physician instructions through their existing belief system and competing demands; they decide whether the recommended actions are possible or desirable in the context of their everyday lives.

I happily agreed to appear, for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that narcissism happens to be one of my favorite subjects. Early in my training, I had the pleasure of working with one of the foremost authorities on narcissism in our field, and in part because of that experience, I went on to work with quite a few clients who’d been diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder. That’s where I learned that the formal diagnostic label hardly does justice to the richness and complexity of this condition.
The most glaring problems are easy to spot — the apparent absence of even a shred of empathy, the grandiose plans and posturing, the rage at being called out on the slightest of imperfections or normal human missteps — but if you get too hung up on the obvious traits, you can easily miss the subtle and often more common features that allow a narcissist to sneak into your life and wreak havoc. Just ask Tina Swithin , who went on to write a book about surviving her experience with a man who clearly meets criteria for NPD and very likely, a few other diagnoses.

Ancient human population histories revealed in Central and South America UNM researchers part of discovery of ancient ancestry linking two continents November 08, Categories: Front Page Anthropology The first high quality ancient DNA data from Central and South America—49 individuals some as old as 11, years—has revealed a major and previously unknown exchanges between populations. Some of these people were over 10, years old. Previously, the only genomes that had been reported from this region and that provided sufficient quality data to analyze were less than 1, years old.

A female doctor is less likely to marry than the average female.
